Ticket Pricing is Under Pressure

Ticket pricing is becoming one of the biggest trust issues in live events. As fees, discounts, dynamic pricing and customer expectations come under greater scrutiny, organisers need flexible pricing tools that also keep the buying experience clear.
Pricing Under Pressure

Pricing Is Now Part of the Experience

For event organisers, ticket pricing has always mattered.

The right price can help sell out a room, drive early demand, protect margins and make an event feel accessible to the right audience. But pricing is no longer just a commercial decision behind the scenes. It is now a visible part of the customer experience.

Attendees are paying closer attention to what they are charged, when they are charged, and whether the final price feels fair. That means organisers need to think carefully about how pricing is presented, not just how it is calculated.

The Trust Question

The issue is not simply whether tickets are expensive or affordable.

The bigger question is whether customers trust the price they see. If an attendee starts with one price and finishes checkout with a very different total, that creates frustration. If pricing changes without clear explanation, it can create confusion. If fees are unclear, customers may feel they are being misled, even when the organiser has no such intention.

Trust is built when the customer understands what they are paying for.

That does not mean pricing has to be basic. It means pricing needs to be clear.

Organisers Still Need Flexibility

At the same time, organisers need room to manage their events commercially.

A single fixed ticket price will not work for every event. Organisers may need early bird pricing, group offers, member discounts, limited-time deals, rep commissions, booking fees, VIP tiers or different pricing for different audiences.

Flexibility matters because events are not all the same. A student night, a festival, a sports event, a venue activation and a brand partnership campaign may all need very different pricing structures.

The challenge is to create flexibility for organisers without creating confusion for customers.

Clear Pricing Creates Confidence

Clear pricing helps both sides.

For attendees, it makes the buying experience easier to understand. They can make a decision with confidence and complete the purchase without feeling surprised at the final step.

For organisers, it creates a stronger foundation for sales. A customer who trusts the checkout process is less likely to abandon their basket and more likely to return for future events.

That matters because repeat attendance is not built only through the event itself. It is also built through every interaction around the event, including the ticket purchase.

Discounts Need Structure

Discounts can be powerful, but they need to be managed properly.

An early bird offer can help drive momentum. A group deal can encourage friends to attend together. A member-only discount can reward loyal customers. A rep code can help track sales and incentivise promoters.

But if discounts are unclear, inconsistent or difficult to reconcile, they can create operational problems. Organisers need to know which offers are live, who has used them, how many remain available and what impact they are having on revenue.

Good pricing is not just about lowering the ticket price. It is about using pricing properly.

The Role of Deals and Memberships

This is where the wider event platform matters.

Ticketing is still central, but organisers increasingly need more ways to package value. Deals and memberships give organisers additional options beyond a standard ticket sale.

A deal might encourage someone to attend during a quieter period, bring a friend, buy earlier or try a new venue. A membership might create a stronger relationship with loyal customers and support more predictable repeat purchase.

Both approaches can support revenue without relying only on one-off ticket sales.

Pricing Should Support the Organiser

The best pricing tools should make the organiser’s job easier.

They should help organisers set prices, manage fees, create offers, track codes, understand performance and communicate value clearly to customers.

They should also support different commercial models. Some organisers may want to absorb certain costs. Others may need to pass fees on. Some may want to use discounts aggressively. Others may prefer membership-led value.

There is no single correct approach. The platform should give organisers control while keeping the customer journey simple.

What This Means for Event Platforms

As ticket pricing comes under more pressure, event platforms have a bigger responsibility.

They need to support transparent checkout experiences, flexible pricing models, clear reporting and tools that help organisers manage revenue without damaging customer trust.

That means pricing cannot be treated as a small technical detail. It is part of the organiser experience, the attendee experience and the long-term relationship between the two.

The Future Is Flexible and Clear

The future of ticket pricing is not about making everything cheaper.

It is about making pricing smarter, clearer and easier to manage.

Organisers need flexibility. Attendees need confidence. Platforms need to support both.

At WotsOn, that is the balance we are building towards: giving organisers more ways to structure, promote and grow their events while keeping the customer experience clear, trusted and easy to understand.
